Best Whiskey Of The Month Club: Flaviar vs Caskers vs Taster’s Club & More

Ron Burgundy once said, “I love scotch, scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes down, down into my belly. Mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm.” Isn’t that how we all feel?

Some say that scotch is the eighth wonder of the world. Okay, maybe we’re exaggerating, but it sure is a delectable beverage.

Now, imagine if you could get rare scotch and other whiskies shipped right to your door to try. Well, guess what? With the best whiskey of the month clubs, you can.

Whiskey 101

We’ve created a separate comprehensive whiskey guide to answer all your questions about this complex libation. We show the origin of the name, the history, how it’s made, whiskey vs bourbon vs scotch, and we answer questions like “what’s the most expensive whiskey ever sold?” and “what’s the oldest whiskey bottle in existence?”

Alcohol Shipping Rules

Make sure the company we review below can deliver alcohol to your state before ordering. Largely because of state laws, not all companies can ship alcohol to all 50 states. We’ve listed each company’s shipping restrictions in our reviews below. Note: None of these clubs can ship to Canada.

Someone who’s at least 21-years-old must sign for the packages. So make sure you (or the person to whom you are gifting) are home or schedule to pick it up at the packaging facility (UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc.) yourself. You can also see if your work would allow you to ship the package there.

Best Whiskey Of The Month Clubs

We based our rankings on several factors, including the uniqueness of the liquor, subscription options, customer service, price, and shipping costs.

A selection of Flaviar whiskey club bottles and a sample kit with three vials.
A selection of Flaviar bottles and a sample kit with three vials.

Flaviar sends three vials of fairly exclusive alcohol in its tasting kit once per quarter, so you can enjoy less commonly stocked liquors. You’re able to select your tasting kit from a large selection of liquors (and see exactly what’s included, including descriptions and user reviews) before you commit.  We think this is pretty cool because you get to have a true tasting at home instead of spending all your money on a bottle that you may not like. They feature many small-batch liquors that you won’t typically find on a shelf at your local bar.

Flaviar whiskey sampler club has a straightforward website with a very exclusive feel to it. Its website discusses prohibition and the speakeasy movement and is technically invite-only although it’s not too difficult to get referred (okay, here you go ;-). Even the packaging has a creative design that exudes the 1920s.

Flaviar has a mobile app and free shipping once per month on anything you want to buy, and their packaging is sophisticated and high quality. Their website is easy to use and contains how-to guides and informative articles. If you like one of the tastings, you can purchase an entire bottle.

Customers report great customer service and a helpful community with ratings on each liquor. You have access to your personal home bar, where you can keep track and rate your favorite whiskeys. You’ll also get personalized recommendations based on your favorites.

Personal Experience

Alex is a whiskey aficionado and has tasted many drams over the years. His Flaviar subscription helps him grow his home bar with some unique additions, but he uses the club selectively. Here are his tips:

With free quarterly bottle (used to be a $45 credit), the value of Flaviar is hard to beat. I almost always enter the private bottling lotteries — those tend to be very high-quality bottles at affordable prices (think Deer, Bear & Moose (a 23-year-old fantastic scotch)), custom 14-year bottling of Dalmore, Whistlepig 12-year, Son of a Peat, etc.).

While the Vault has some really rare stuff, the prices are usually overblown and available for less elsewhere, although I always browse it because every now and then I’ll discover a rare and affordable gem.

Alex S., Exploring Life’s Mysteries

The Vault is an exclusive feature where rare whiskeys are held (think Pappy Van Winkle) and sold to members. They often sell out quickly, so you have to act quickly.

Flaviar partners with distillers and offers the ability to purchase private bottlings (for example, the “Flaviar” blend of a Whistlepig 12 year) to its members via a lottery.

If you’re interested in trying different whiskies, this is an excellent small-batch whiskey of the month club (or scotch or gin or whatever fills your snifter!).

Where Can Flaviar Ship To?

Pour More whiskey club

Pour More stands out for its sheer variety of packages you can subscribe to — you get two or three levels of package options each for whiskey, bourbon, and scotch (as well as others for tequila and rum and a bartender package to round out your home bar).

You’ll receive one 750ml bottle each month with each club package. The pricing differences are based on the quality level. For example, every monthly bottle you get with the highest (Connoisseur) package is super premium-quality liquor compared to what you’ll get with the lower-priced packages. But all of their offerings are high quality.

With each delivery, you get a hand-selected spirit as well as informational material, including whiskey profiles, tasting notes, a style guide, cocktail ideas, and production techniques about each monthly selected spirit.

Pour More also gets overall solid customer reviews for their selections (especially their scotch), on-time delivery, and customer support. You can cancel your subscription anytime, and they offer a 30-day return policy for unopened bottles.

Pour More is unable to ship to: AL, AK, AR, DE, HI, IL, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MS, MT, NH, ND, OK, OR, PA, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WV, and WY.

Tasters Club Review

Tasters Club whiskey club

Tasters Club offers separate subscriptions for whiskey, bourbon, scotch, and many other liquors. They ship one 750ml bottle each month for your enjoyment. With each monthly bottle, you receive expert-level tasting, history, and distillery notes.

Tasters Club does not announce ahead of time what bottle it’s shipping, so it’s a surprise every month. This may be a pro or con to you — a pro because it’s a surprise or a con because if you don’t like it, you’re stuck with an entire bottle.

If you ever have any issues, customers rave about Tasters Club’s customer service. Unfortunately, there are some complaints of the liquor costing less than the subscription price, so customers feel like they’re not getting the best value. And shipping is $15 per delivery.

You can sign up for a month-to-month plan, and they also offer three, six and 12-month subscriptions (but you don’t get discounts on their monthly pricing if you prepay for these). However, you can cancel at any time.

Tasters Club is great if you want to fill your at-home bar with various types of whiskey that you may not have access to. Or, if you’re looking for gifts for whiskey, bourbon, or scotch lovers, this is an excellent choice too.

Tasters Club is unable to ship to: AL, AK, AR, HI, KY, MS, ND, OK, and UT.

Pros

Cons

  • Nine different subscription clubs (whiskey, scotch, bourbon, gin, rum, vodka, etc.)
  • Fairly competitive club pricing
  • They ship to more states than most other companies we review here
  • Full-bar subscription option
  • Can cancel, pause, or switch to another club anytime
  • Excellent customer service
  • Only option is one full-sized bottle per month
  • No prepay discounts
  • Hefty shipping fee
  • Return policy unavailable on website

Mash & Grape Review

Mash & Grape logo

Visit Website

Mash & Grape sources their spirits from world-class small distillers and independent bottlers to send you the most exceptional bottles, and they offer six different clubs. They select a finely curated bottle 750ml bottle each month, so you can’t customize your bottles. But you can get a good idea of the types of spirits they carry on their well-stocked online store, where you can purchase additional bottles.

Mash & Grape offers a month-to-month subscription and prepaid subscriptions for three, six or 12 months. Their pricing is competitive, and you get detailed tasting notes and details about each spirit with each shipment.

Mash & Grape is unable to ship to: AL, AR, MI, MS, OK, OH, SD, UT, and VT.

  • Six different subscription clubs (whiskey, scotch, bourbon, gin, rum, and tequila)

Whisky Flavour Review

Whisky Flavour logo

Visit Website

Whisky Flavour is a Portugal-based company whose club offering is most similar to our number one pick, Flaviar, in that you get sample-sized bottles rather than full-sized. They deliver four miniature bottles every month, while Flaviar delivers three quarterly.

You can sign up monthly or prepay for three, six, or 12 months (but you don’t get any prepay discounts). Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information on their website about the types of whisky they ship other than they hail from the world’s most respected distilleries. There’s also a lack of information about their return policy, whether you can cancel anytime, etc.

Caution: We contacted Whisky Flavour about where they can ship to in the U.S. They replied that they can ship to all states. But we caution you here — find out what your state law is regarding having liquor shipped directly to you before you order. Some states strictly prohibit this practice. And, as a consumer, you run the risk of violating your state laws when getting liquor shipments to your home or business.

Pros

Cons

  • You get four different small-batch whiskies in each delivery so you’re not stuck with a whole bottle if you don’t like the selections
  • Blog with interesting whisky-related articles
  • No specific information on website about where they can and can’t ship to (they only say globally)
  • No details about what types of whisky they include
  • Hefty shipping fee per month
  • No full-sized bottles available for purchase

Pricing

  • Club: €75 (est. $88 USD)/month
  • Shipping: €15 (est. $17.50 USD)/month

Keeping Track Of Your Favorites

There are many platforms and apps out there that let you keep track (and sometimes even re-order) your favorite drams. At the moment our favorite is Distiller.com because of its large database, user and expert reviews, and ability to create lists to track your drams. For example, we like to create a list of our “collection,” “top shelf,” “emptied” (so we don’t forget what we tasted), and “wishlist” for re-ordering or trying new drams.

What’s The Best Way To Drink Whiskey?

Watch the video below to learn how to properly drink whiskey. There may be some sarcasm here and there, but it’s a fun one to watch and has millions of views, so clearly others have enjoyed it.

Why Stop At Whiskey? Don’t Miss These Wine & Beer Clubs

Are you into whiskey but your spouse is interested in another type of alcohol? Have no fear. Did you know there are other monthly clubs that deliver wine and beer? While you’re sipping on your single malt scotch, let your sweetie choose a monthly wine club or beer of the month club, so you can both enjoy an adult beverage after a hard day’s work.

Pour More’s website state delivery list is different from what you have listed.

I think maybe people don’t realize just how dope Flaviar is. They started out not as the best deal in town, but clearly now they’re trying hard to compete. So for $25 month (and no I don’t work for them, just been a member for a while and was about to cancel before they upped the ante), you get (I’ve included my notes on what perk I think is worthwhile, and which I think are a joke):

  • Tasting Box (these are cool, great way to sample whiskeys without buying the whole bottle – and trust me, unless you live in a big city, your average Joe bar won’t carry most of these).
  • Full-size bottle of your choice (pro tip: this is essentially a $45 credit, which means you can stack up credit for a super nice bottle instead of spending it on an “average” one).
  • Free shipping every month (I use this every month, totally worth it – try any online shop and you’ll see that it’s the shipping fee that kills the deal).
  • Free live tasting events (negative captain, I could care less about these).
  • Generous refer-a-friend program (not bad, you get a $50 credit for everyone you refer – has already secured me a bottle of Boss Hog VI Samurai Scientist (one of the best whiskeys I’ve ever had) after I referred my whiskey club, 11 of 15 members signed up).
  • Cancel any time (well I would F-in hope so!)

– Joe Whiskey (a couple whiskeys in), over and out

Haha, that Ron Burgundy intro is classic!!! LOL, makes me want a Whiskey now!
